We recently visited the beautiful tropical paradise of Fitzroy Island.   This island and resort is so easy to get to and so perfect for families. Located just a short boat ride from Cairns.  Fitzroy Island is a National Park offering amazing rainforest and stunning beaches and it's on the Great Barrier Reef.

The island is home to the Fitzroy Island Resort, a small modern resort with excellent facilities.  The resort is located beachfront but nestled into the rainforest behind.  Accommodation options are plentiful with studios, apartments, suites, cabins and cottages. You can even bring your tent and camp. For our larger families out there they even have 2 bedroom suites that can sleep 6.

We stayed in an ocean suite and our views were just spectacular.  From the master bedroom, lounge and balcony we looked straight out over the ocean and swaying palm trees. We had a full kitchen, bathroom, laundry and lounge plus a beautiful balcony to sit and watch the sun go down. Just a few steps in one direction and we were on the beach and snorkelling over coral reefs, a few steps the other way and we were on the walking paths through the National Park.

If you want to explore, walks through the tropical rainforest will take you to secluded beaches such as Nudey Beach. (despite the name clothes are required).  Walk to the secret garden, or for a longer and quite challenging hike head to the lighthouse and summit for spectacular views.

There is no kids club as such but there is plenty for the whole family to do.  There is a games room, kids play room, movie room, fantastic snorkeling (we swam with 8 turtles and saw loads of fish and coral). The Dive and Adventure centre offers a range of activities and tours including diving, snorkelling, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, glass bottom boat tours and more.   Kids, big and little will love the tour of the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.  You will learn about marine life and rescue and observe turtles recovering from injury and being prepared for their return to the ocean.

There is also a large swimming pool and spa with the ever popular swim up pool bar and plenty of banana lounges to kick back and read a book while the kids play.

The resort offers two great restaurants, Zephyr Restaurant offers a la carte dining indoors or on the terrace overlooking the sea.  Foxy's is more pub style offering entertainment, great food and drink right on the waters edge.  The Pool bar is open in the afternoons for that holiday cocktail as the sun goes down.  Many of the room types have full kitchens which saves you dollars if you want to bring over food and prepare some meals in your room. There is a small convenience store at the resort also with sandwiches, pies, chips, soft drinks, icecreams etc.

To access Fitzroy Island Resort the Fast Cat travels three times daily 0800 , 1100 or 1330 (except February and March when they offer two, transfers at 0800 & 1330). between the resort jetty and Cairns Marina.  Cairns is a wonderful city and has so much to offer families, the lagoon on the beachfront, parks, markets, day tours and more.  If time allows why not add on a few days in Cairns to explore or if you need to get going then a quick 20 min taxi ride from the Cairns Marina will have you at the airport ready to fly home.

We truly loved this resort, its paradise so close to home, its very affordable and we are returning for longer next year.  I think 5 days will be perfect for our family.

Please remember its stinger season during summer so its best to wear stinger suits.   Or why not escape from the cooler months down south as its always lovely and warm up in North Queensland.
