New Caledonia is just a few hours flying time from Australia’s east coast. This little South Pacific French territory is made up of dozens of islands. It’s known for its palm-lined beaches and marine-life-rich lagoon.

Many people may have visited its capital Noumea on a cruise ship out of Australia. This gorgeous tropical paradise is a destination of its own with activities and accommodation to suit families of all sizes and budgets.

The lagoon of New Caledonia which, at 24,000-sq.-km, is among the world’s largest. In 2008 the lagoon was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional natural beauty and astounding marine biodiversity.

On your next holiday take the plunge into this underwater paradise and let your senses feast on colourful fish and vibrant coral beds that seem to stretch for miles. Giant black manta rays, sea turtles and dugongs also frequent the lagoon’s warm waters and are known to cosy up to visitors so be ready for an experience of a lifetime.

The capital, Nouméa, is home to French-influenced restaurants and luxury boutiques selling Parisian fashions. There are a range of accommodation options from hotels to overwater luxury bungalows. Families are well catered for with beachside resorts and kids clubs.
